Weaker than you might imagine: Determining imageability effects on word recognition

چکیده
Imageability – the ease of generating a mental image for word has been commonly used as predictor recognition but its effects are highly variable across literature, raising questions about robustness and stability construct. We compared six existing imageability norms in their ability to predict RT accuracy lexical decision naming thousands words. Results showed that, when sensorimotor sources variance were partialled out, predicted little unique performance effect sizes varied greatly between norms. Further analysis suggested that such heterogenous likely due inconsistent strategies how participants interpret rate norming studies, despite consistent instructions. Our findings suggest does not reliably facilitate ratings should be with caution research.

Globalization Is Weaker Than You Think
From 1980 to 2004, world trade in goods and services increased from 36 percent to 50 percent of world GDP. As the world experienced a surge in the trade of goods and services, it also saw a substantial rise in the trade of financial assets. The share of foreign equities in U.S. investors’ portfolios, for instance, increased from about 1 percent in the early 1980s to 12 percent in 2000.1 On that...
متن کاملPushing drug-eluting stents into uncharted territory: simpler than you think--more complex than you imagine.
Mechanical failure is a characteristic of a material or device and not necessarily an indication of inadequacy. All devices will fail under some specific stress. It is only failure at the lowest levels of stress that may represent inadequacy. Stress on a material, for example, rises with strain until a critical load is exceeded, at which point the material fatigues and loses mechanical integrit...
متن کاملWord imageability affects the hippocampus in recognition memory.
Concrete words, whose meanings are readily imagined, are better remembered than abstract words. However, the neural correlates of this effect are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effect of imageability on brain activity in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) processes underlying recognition memory. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) via depth electrodes from within the MTL in 14...
متن کاملRevisiting age-of-acquisition effects in Spanish visual word recognition: the role of item imageability.
Word age-of-acquisition (AoA) affects reading. The mapping hypothesis predicts AoA effects when input-output mappings are arbitrary. In Spanish, the orthography-to-phonology mappings required for word naming are consistent; therefore, no AoA effects are expected. Nevertheless, AoA effects have been found, motivating the present investigation of how AoA can affect reading in Spanish. Four experi...

Robert G. Hahn, MD, PhD Young anesthesiologists have long been taught that the replacement of losses is the key target in the management of IV fluid therapy. During surgery, a fluid deficit is undoubtedly created by preoperative fasting, surgical blood loss, evaporation, and urinary excretion. The vasodilatation induced by many forms of anesthesia allows the vascular space to contain more plasm...
